A hybrid inverter combines solar and storage functions, but capabilities vary by model. The word “hybrid” does not guarantee backup, three-phase operation or compatibility with every battery.
Energy flows and permissions
The design may route generation to loads, charge storage and discharge it later. Permitted grid flows depend on equipment, settings and connection conditions. A device's technical capability is not permission to use every available operating mode.
DC and AC coupling
In a DC-coupled architecture, storage connects to the compatible DC side of the hybrid system. An AC-coupled design uses a separate battery converter on the AC side. The latter may be considered for existing PV, but overall coordination and outage behaviour need assessment.
Neither architecture is always superior. Existing equipment, conversion paths, future expansion and backup requirements determine the appropriate arrangement.
Distinguish four power ratings
| Rating | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| PV input capacity | Permitted array arrangement |
| Grid-connected output | Supply during normal operation |
| Charge/discharge power | Rate of battery energy transfer |
| Backup output | Loads supported during an outage |
These ratings may differ. A headline 10 kW value does not describe every mode. Backup may also have phase-specific limits and starting-load restrictions.
Before purchasing
Request supported battery models, metering requirements, approved backup arrangements and per-phase limits. Sensitive equipment may require a separate UPS assessment because transfer time matters as much as total capacity. Retrofit work requires inspection of the existing switchboard and protection.
Commissioning should demonstrate the selected operating mode, reserve settings and behaviour when grid supply returns. Handover should explain which circuits are backed up and how the user can recognise a low-energy condition.
The Anissaras storage project remains a storage reference without an invented inverter model. See our battery service and, for one equipment family, Huawei's official residential documentation.
A diagram is more useful than a label
Ask for a single-line diagram showing PV, inverter, battery, meter, grid and critical loads. Mark energy flows in normal operation and during an outage. This reveals whether backup is actually part of the installation or merely a potential product capability.
Ask for battery charge and discharge power, the power available to critical circuits and the response to high demand at low charge. The hybrid inverter's nominal rating alone does not answer all of these questions.
