Hotel electricity use changes with occupancy, services and season length. Summer demand can coincide with solar generation, but the daily profile still needs measurement. Evening room cooling and morning laundry create different requirements.

Record demand by operation

  • Cooling: operating hours, room controls and seasonal peaks.
  • Kitchen and laundry: schedules, thermal loads and flexibility.
  • Pools and pumps: operating programmes and required service levels.
  • Common areas and IT: continuous and critical loads.

Annual consumption without occupancy data can make two different tourist seasons appear directly comparable when they are not. Note renovations, added rooms and changes to food or laundry services.

Surplus outside the season

Generation may continue while the property is closed. Assess off-season demand, permitted exports and maintenance loads. A battery does not move summer generation into winter; it supports shorter shifts according to its capacity and operating strategy.

Compare a smaller array with higher utilisation against a larger array with more surplus. The best choice depends on connection terms and actual economics, not simply the available roof area.

Roof layout and guest operations

Design considers visibility, access, existing rooftop equipment, shading and maintenance routes. Check noise and thermal requirements against the actual equipment models. Installation scheduling should account for guest operations and safe separation of work areas.

A published project reference

The website records a 10 kW hotel PV system in Zaros, Heraklion under Net Metering. Occupancy, bills and measured financial results are not published, so no savings percentage is transferred to another hotel.

What to request

Ask for monthly generation and demand, operating-season versus off-season comparisons and an expansion scenario. Review UPS and backup separately for critical systems. For the investment, start with commercial solar and the Crete production guide. A documented seasonal model is more useful than an annual saving claim without inputs.

Occupancy changes the picture

Record the baseline use of a nearly closed hotel separately from added loads at high occupancy. Cooling, pumps, common areas and kitchens do not always follow the same pattern. For a seasonal hotel, annual PV output should not be treated as equally usable during the operating season.

At the site survey, check panel locations against access, fire safety and maintenance work. For storage or UPS, define specific critical circuits rather than promising that “the hotel will keep running” during an outage. A technical proposal should separate energy savings from continuity of service.
